SafeCompanion ("Company," "we," "us," or "our") is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy describes how we collect, use, disclose, and safeguard your personal information when you use the SafeCompanion mobile application ("App"). By using the App, you consent to the practices described in this Privacy Policy.
We collect the following categories of information:
Account Information: When you register, we collect your username and password (stored as a cryptographic hash). We do not store plain-text passwords.
Location Data: We collect your precise GPS location at regular intervals during active safety sessions, distress alert events, meetup sessions, and parental tracking sessions to enable route tracking, emergency contact notification, location sharing, and parental monitoring features.
Emergency Contact Information: We collect names, phone numbers, and relationships of contacts you designate as emergency contacts. This information is used solely to send SMS notifications on your behalf.
Session Data: We record session type, start and end times, route coordinates, duration, and session status for your session history.
Device Information: We may collect device type, operating system version, and app version for troubleshooting and compatibility purposes.
Safety Code: Your emergency address pin code is stored locally on your device and is used to cancel distress alerts.
We use the information we collect to: (a) provide, operate, and maintain the App's safety features; (b) send SMS alerts and notifications to your emergency contacts during distress events, session starts, and check-ins; (c) enable real-time location sharing during meetups and parental tracking sessions; (d) display location-based area safety information; (e) process subscription payments through the Apple App Store or Google Play Store; (f) improve the App's functionality and user experience; and (g) comply with legal obligations.
We use Twilio, a third-party communications provider, to send SMS messages to your emergency contacts. Messages are sent when you trigger a distress alert (includes your last known GPS location), start a safety session, or use the Check In feature. By using these features, you authorize us to send SMS messages to the phone numbers you provide.
Most of your personal data, including contacts, session history, safety code, and preferences, is stored locally on your device using AsyncStorage. Account credentials are transmitted securely to our servers, where passwords are hashed using bcrypt. We implement commercially reasonable security measures to protect your information.
Twilio: For sending SMS notifications. Twilio processes recipient phone numbers and message content.
RevenueCat: For subscription management and in-app purchase processing. Payment processing is handled entirely by Apple or Google; we do not receive or store your payment card information.
Apple/Google Maps: For reverse geocoding and map display. Your location coordinates may be sent to Apple or Google's mapping services.
We do not sell, trade, or rent your personal information to third parties. We may share your information only in the following circumstances: (a) with your emergency contacts when you trigger a distress alert, start a session, or check in; (b) with meetup participants during active meetup sessions (location only); (c) with a linked parent/guardian during parental tracking sessions (location only); (d) with third-party service providers who assist in operating the App; (e) if required by law or court order; or (f) to protect our rights, property, or safety.
Session history and contact information are stored locally on your device and persist until you delete them or uninstall the App. Account information on our servers is retained as long as your account is active. You may request deletion of your account by contacting us at support@safecompanionapp.com.
The App is not intended for children under 13 years of age. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If we become aware that we have collected personal information from a child under 13, we will take steps to delete such information promptly.

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Changes will be posted within the App and the 'Last Updated' date will be revised. Your continued use of the App after changes are posted constitutes your acceptance of the updated Privacy Policy.
